Everything you need to know about layering perfume

Buy & Wear Perfume
Layer perfume

Layering perfume has been long practiced by perfume aficionados and insiders, but now it’s mainstreaming among almost anyone who has a bit of a fragrance collection going on. Still, there are those of us who don’t know quite what the fuss is all about, nor bother to practice it. Surely, spraying on two or more fragrances is going to just up your costs and waste more precious juice? Who wants to do that?

In this article, we unpack the purpose of layering perfume to find out why it’s an interesting concept and why you might wish to join the layering club. Does it unlock new olfactory experiences and elevate your scent game? Or is it just something to brag about and feel ahead of the mere single-spritz folks?

As you’ll find out, it is most likely a bit of both. However, for all the allure of creating unique fragrance blends yourself, it’s critical to understand the nuances, techniques, and also the potential safety considerations associated with layering perfumes. First, let’s start with the basics and some of the FAQs we see circulating so you’re not at a loss about layering.

What is Perfume Layering?

what is layering perfume

Perfume layering involves combining two or more fragrances to create a personalised scent profile on your skin. As fragrances are described in musical terms with notes being the single scent building blocks and accords being unisons of three or myriad individual notes, we can use the same analogy to define perfume layering.

In this case, layering is akin to composing a symphony, where each whole fragrance  – itself the sum of those many parts – harmonises to produce a scent profile uniquely tailored to your preferences.

Whether this takes you time or you hit lucky and produce the perfect layered perfume first time can be hit and miss. The more you learn about fragrance construction, read reviews, dig deep into how some top name noses work, and get to know house brand styles, the better the chance of perfecting perfume layering.

Does Layering Make Perfume Last Longer?

does layering make perfume last longer

It can, but not necessarily so. It depends on your chosen core fragrances. To ensure your layered perfumes do create a singular fragrance that lasts longer, you would need to apply complementary scents with varying molecular weights and volatility.

To create a multi-dimensional scent that evolves over time, you need to think like a perfume choosing a balance of top notes for immediate effect and attraction, mid notes from the layered scents that harmonise well and have purpose (this is not called the heart of the perfume for no reason), and also understand the complementary role of base notes in the dry-down in anchoring the mid notes and fixing or retaining the perfume on the skin longer.

Of course, you may wish to create a linear layered perfume by choosing fragrances that are constructed to remain the same over time with no traditional peel of those perfume pyramid notes.

If you choose a combo of fragrances that are heavy on citrus tops notes, like the traditional colognes, you may not achieve more longevity of scent than if you had used a single perfume and not layered. Citruses, by the way, tend to blend harmoniously, so are far less risky to layer. These articles are useful to explore for further reading on longevity and citrus in perfume:

As you can see, it may not be easy to get the right combination of layered perfumes the first time or so, but with practice and by extending your knowledge, you can certainly achieve success in both scent profile and the Holy Grail of perfume longevity.

How to Layer Perfume: Unveiling the Ritual

how to layer perfume step by step guide

We raced ahead in the longevity section, but let’s guide you now on how to begin your olfactory journey into perfume layering.

Step One: First, select two or more fragrances that complement each other. Start with a base scent, which may also be, if you prefer, a body lotion, balm or oil or perfumed oil. Emulsion and oil-based cosmetics will help hydrate the skin and provide a heavier, semi-occlusive and anchoring foundation for the subsequent layers of more volatile alcohol perfume. See our point below about safety and caution in layering if applying lotions and oils.

Step Two: Next, apply the fragrances from lightest to heaviest – that is those you discern as more fleeting and more long lasting – focusing on pulse points such as the wrists, neck, and décolletage – or hair if you wish. Allow each layer to settle before adding the next, allowing each layer to bed in and unfold a little before applying the next.

Before spraying any old perfume one, do have your scent end-game in mind. For instance, are you looking to blend floral and citrus notes for a refreshing daytime or office wear day fragrance or to combine woody and oriental accords for a sultry evening allure. The possibilities are endless, but start with the end in mind.

Step Three: Assess your layered perfume over time, making notes almost immediately on its scent profile and effect, and then at 10-15 minute intervals for an hour, and then a couple of hours or so later to check the dry-down. This will guide you if you repeat the process swapping out a fragrance for another, and in achieving the profile you desire. This is how perfumers train in getting to know their materials. Trial and error and meticulous note-taking will make you a perfume-layering pro.

Is Perfume Layering a Thing – your Thing?

Now you know how to layer, would you bother? It is certainly fun if you are ‘into perfumes’ and it gives you an insight into the work of the professional perfumer. It can help you develop greater olfactory awareness and be more knowledgeable when you go to buy perfumes.

It can also help you use up some bottles of fragrance you bought and barely used. Duds and scrubbers may blossom into something entirely different and more palatable if joined by other fragrances.

We’re all for not wasting anything you’ve spent cash on. That duty-free impulse buy fragrance that’s sat on your shelf gathering dust may indeed find a second life alongside a well-chosen perfume companion or two.

Perfume layering transcends trends; it’s a timeless practice and once embraced, it gives you endless ways to express your individuality through scent – without necessarily buying more.

When done thoughtfully, layering perfume can be a fun experience as you tailor fragrance to fit your unique personality. It allows you to break free from conventional fragrance norms and curate a signature scent that resonates.

Let’s talk Safety Aspects

safety and allergy issue of perfume layering

Now we’ve chatted about the allure of layering perfumes, it’s time to address an essential, but less discussed aspect: safety.

Each individual perfume undergoes safety testing – in the EU before it can be sold, and in many other jurisdictions too – to ensure compliance with safety standards, particularly concerning allergens. We cover fragrance allergens and compliance in some depth in these articles, if you wish to have more background:

Exactly what is natural perfume?

However, when layering multiple fragrances, there’s a risk of overloading the skin with a barrage of allergens that are the sum total of those present in each perfume – which could be over the EU and IFRA (International Fragrance Association) limits. This overload could potentially trigger adverse reactions, especially for individuals with sensitive skin,  allergies or a compromised skin barrier. Beauty insider Glossy, recently reported skincare brand Cetaphil saying that “…in 2021, [it] found that 70% of Americans self-diagnose as having sensitive skin…”. Clearly, skin sensitivity is a big issue.

With the average woman using 12 beauty products a day, according to a Harvard Medical School report, from shower gels to moisturisers, make-up and fragrance, and with others using far more, it is easy to see why allergic reactions to cosmetics is on the rise.

A note too about using body oils, perfume oils or emulsion lotions before applying alcohol perfumes: the skin is a semi-permeable membrane with its outermost layer, the stratum corneum, comprising lipids, including ceramides, cholesterol, and free fatty acids. The epidermis is coated in a gamut of substances bundled together in what is called the Natural Moisturising Factor (NMF). These form the skin barrier that protects the skin from external pathogens, maintains a healthy skin biome and helps the skin to function as an organ (for example, in secreting waste through sweat) and to retain moisture levels.

Lipids in body lotions and oils will mix with the skin’s own lipids to provide external moisturising and to act as an occlusive layer to maintain skin hydration and prevent trans-epidermal water loss.

Alcohol fragrances are safety assessed in line with their load per defined areas of skin based on typical, average usage on pulse points and do not take into account their application together.

If you apply alcohol fragrance on top of lotions or oils, their molecules will bind with the other cosmetics and be in longer and closer contact with the skin as their fragrance molecules are less volatile in oil and emulsion bases. You can see the advantage of moisturising your skin for perfume longevity, but you may need to think carefully about the fragrance load and choose your layering perfumes wisely especially if you are prone to sensitive skin or certain allergenic fragrance materials.

We therefore advise you to exercise caution and moderation when layering perfumes, and limit your layers – two fragrances could be more than enough – to ensure you don’t compromise your skin health. Always do a test patch when layering – and before using any perfume in fact.

FAQs on Perfume Layering

What Perfumes Layer Well Together? Experimentation is key when exploring fragrance combinations. However, a general rule of thumb is to pair scents with complementary or contrasting notes, such as floral and woody or citrus and oriental, to create harmonious blends that captivate the senses.

Layer Perfume Brands: While certain brands offer pre-designed fragrance layering sets – for example, Jo Malone colognes are expressly designed for layering experiments and offer ‘tasting notes’ and recommendations on other fragrances in their range to pair with. Don’t hesitate to mix and match perfumes from different brands to craft your unique olfactory masterpiece. Embrace creativity and let your intuition be your guide in the realm of perfume layering.

In conclusion, perfume layering is a journey of self-expression and sensory exploration. By understanding the techniques, embracing creativity, and acknowledging the importance of safety, you can enjoy olfactory forms to express yourself in fragrance in a more personal and unique way.
