The Fragrance vs Fragrance-Free Debate in Cosmetics

Buy & Wear Perfume
fragrance vs fragrance-free cosmetics

The cosmetics industry finds itself in a nuanced debate over the inclusion of fragrance at a time when beauty consumers are demanding more fragrance-free cosmetics. For many of us, it may be just a matter of personal taste  – or necessity, if allergens are at play – that drives our choice over whether to opt for fragrance or fragrance-free cosmetics.

However, the issue of including fragrance in beauty products is complex. For a start, even so-called fragrance-free cosmetics (and household products) are likely to contain fragrancing or masking ingredients to neutralise undesirable scents inherent in the foundation materials used.

Here, we delve into the complexity of the fragrance vs fragrance-free debate, exploring such issues as the sustainability of essential oil harvesting, the controversies surrounding petrochemical-derived synthetic fragrance materials, the escalation of allergic reactions to fragrance materials, and the diverse reasons supporting fragrance use.

As a niche perfume house, we of course love scent in all its forms, but also acknowledge the need for a balanced view of its use – and advocate against its overuse.  Why use well over 100 fragrance materials to create a perfume? And shouldn’t we all reduce our own personal wearing of fragrance in confined spaces such as the workplace or entertainment venues?

If you’ve walked through the perfumery aisles in airport duty frees or departments stores (the few that still exist), then you will have experienced fragrance overload. Even the perfume aficionado is likely to recoil at the cacophony of scents circulating there.

We lay out some of the main reasons for fragrance and fragrance-free moments in our lives in order to sensitise us – no pun intended – to the needs of all, whether we love and wear or eschew fragrance in all cosmetics.

1. The Sustainability Dilemma of Essential Oils

Fragrance and sustainability

Nature’s scents, encapsulated in essential oils, contribute to the allure of natural and organic cosmetics. However, this green choice raises questions about the sustainability of essential oil harvesting. As demand for natural fragrances rises, so too do concerns about the ecological impact of cultivating vast fields of oil harvest crops. The challenge lies in striking a balance between the desire for natural scents and the imperative to protect our environment.

Essential oil crops, even the prettier and insect-attracting varieties, can prove to be monocrops that upset the delicately-balanced ecosystem of the habitats they grow in. Roses may look lovely in fields, but for their oils to be at their best, their buds are picked at first dawn when just opening, and before the insects can reap their nectar benefits. Rose, in particular, is good case in point as its oil yield is low, necessitating their wider-scale cultivation to produce the oil volumes needed by the fragrance industry.

However, large fragrances houses are changing things up and we have seen initiatives to improve the sustainability of rose crop growing and oil production as well as green chemistry to reduce energy and water used in essential oil production. We’re keeping an eye on the firms to ensure we get their supplies.

By embracing responsible sourcing and having full transparency of the field-to-fragrance path (that is still a way off), the industry can navigate the fragrance dilemma, preserving the beauty of natural scents while minimising the ecological footprint.

The fragrant allure of essential oils needs to be balanced with environmental stewardship. Upping our sustainable practices, from grower and producer to the big fragrance chemical firms down to niche perfume houses like Olentium is an opportunity, not a threat, and a chance for us to truly do something different in this historic industry.

2. Issues with Petrochemical-Derived Fragrance Materials

natural vs synthetic fragrance ingredients

Integral to modern cosmetic formulations for over 100 years now, synthetic fragrance materials, especially those derived from petrochemicals, are not without controversy. Critics highlight environmental risks and potential health concerns. The debate needs to widen out to discuss the sustainability and environmental impact of synthetics vs naturals; the latter, as we noted above, are not without their own critics and issues. Dialogue rather than diametrically opposing views about responsible ingredient choices should come into play here.

Synthetic fragrance materials, often derived from petrochemicals, can offer precision and stability in fragrance formulations, however the building blocks of many synthetic fragrances are derived from non-renewable resources and thereby contribute to carbon emissions and environmental degradation. Critics argue that the long-term consequences of relying on petrochemical-derived materials may outweigh their short-term benefits. In addition, the argument that they are merely by-products of a petrochemical industry put to good use is also naive.

By acknowledging the controversies surrounding petrochemical-derived synthetic fragrance materials, the cosmetics industry is at a crossroads. Sustainable alternatives, such as bio-based or lab-grown ingredients, are emerging as viable options. These alternatives aim to retain the precision and safety associated with synthetics while minimising the environmental impact.

A University of Glasgow research start-up, Scent No. M, is pioneering the biotech development of certain essential oils. It’s early days, but with a mission to improve the ethics and sustainability of the fragrance industry, this firm is proving R&D can start to provide answers to resolve the synths vs naturals, and both vs sustainability conundrum.

As yet,  niche perfumery is some way off reaping the benefits of bio-mimicking, bio-tech and more sustainably-produced fragrance materials as the big fragrance firms invest and use them as captives (material proprietary to them and for their use only). But, we hope that they will become the norm and trickle down to smaller players if they can prove they replace both some naturals and petrochemical-derived materials sustainably.

3. Allergens: when Fragrance vs Fragrance-free is not an option

fragrance allergens

As personal care product usage rises, so too does the incidence of allergic reactions to fragrance chemicals. The undeniable allure of fragrances in cosmetics comes with a growing concern — the rise in allergic reactions to fragrance chemicals.

Realising the need to heighten transparency in the catch-all ‘parfum’ that goes into our cosmetics, the European Commission’s initiative to expand the list of allergens that must be declared on packaging from 26 to 80 or so, is a positive step towards empowering consumers with essential information. This will enable us to be informed about allergens and in making our cosmetics’ choices.

Allergic reactions can vary widely, from mild skin irritations to more severe respiratory responses. By acknowledging and addressing the potential risks associated with fragrance chemicals, the cosmetics industry can foster a safer and more inclusive environment. This requires not only adherence to regulatory measures, but also proactive efforts to educate consumers about the diverse nature of fragrance ingredients and their potential effects.

It also means we all need to be label experts. We dissect what goes on fragrance labels in this article:

4. The Pleasure and Purpose of Fragrance: Well-being and Beyond

Fragrance as therapeutic well-being

The role of fragrance in cosmetics transcends mere aesthetics; it holds the power to influence emotions, trigger memories, and enhance overall well-being. See our post for just some of the many reasons we choose to wear fragrance or are influenced by it:

The Psychology of Scent: 25 Reasons we wear perfume

Research continues to evidence the therapeutic potential of fragrances, particularly in the early diagnosis and mitigation of Alzheimers and dementia. The ability of scents to evoke emotions and memories offers a unique route for the cosmetic industry to contribute positively to mental and emotional health.

For us to embrace fragrance as therapeutic we need to shift our perspective – from viewing it as a mere cosmetic ingredient to recognising its potential as a tool for holistic wellbeing. Any perfume fan would already say that they purchase fragrances for this reason as well.  But for those who rarely wear fragrance, the intentional selection of scents that bring joy and evoke positive emotions could become a form of self-care, rather than a cosmetic indulgence. This redefined approach to fragrance is in line with a broader cultural shift toward holistic wellness, emphasising the interconnectedness of physical, mental, and emotional aspects of health.

Beyond the cosmetic appeal, fragrances become agents of positive change, contributing to a more holistic and mindful approach to personal care. By connecting beauty and well-being, fragrance is inviting us to explore it not just as a cosmetic choice, but as a conscious contribution to our overall quality of life.

Fragrance vs fragrance-free is not the question

From our quick tour of the key issues underlying and directing our use of fragrance, it’s clear that the fragrance vs fragrance-free debate is nuanced and complex. In the future, we will be juggling far more than a love-hate relationship with fragrance in a black-and-white sense. We will all be peering at labels, questioning fragrance houses, and thinking deeper about what ‘natural’ means for sustainability.

There is no doubt we need transparency on those allergens, but we also should consider the therapeutic potential of fragrance for mental well-being.

Fragrance has a profound impact on our lives and it’s not going away. So, we need to see inclusive dialogue, where diverse perspectives from both sides of the fragrance vs fragrance-free camps shape a future for cosmetics that is conscious of both our sensory experiences and the planet.
