Why Oil Perfumes are a Must-Have in your Collection

Buy & Wear Perfume
Advantages of Oil Perfumes
Latest Update: 3 June, 2026

There is an other-worldliness and timeless allure to oil perfumes. Interestingly, oil-based perfumes are now on the rise after decades of alcohol fragrances dominating shelves and sales. Certain cultures, particularly those who eschew alcohol, have always held on to their love of oil perfumes. The Middle East and Asia have always revered perfumed oils, while Africa is the source of innumerable, luxurious (and skin-nourishing) plant oils and butters like shea, argan, baobab and marula.

Yet, once upon a time in the West, in the Mediterranean in particular, botanical oil-based perfumes were the only ones known. It has taken almost a millennia for oil to come fully back into the picture. Now, not despite, but because of their ancient roots, oil perfumes are finding new audiences and captivating modern scent enthusiasts.  In this post, we’ll look at the reasons why and also dispel some myths about using oil perfumes, such as their greasy application and limitations of scent profile.

At the heart of oil perfumes lies a wealth of advantages over their alcohol-based counterparts. Which is why at Olentium, we’ve embraced this age-old tradition to offer an oil version of each of our fragrances. (At the time of writing, we offer oil versions on demand, so contact us if you wish to purchase.)

There are plenty of reasons to love using both alcohol and oil-based perfumes, but for now, it’s time to discover just why oil-based perfumes have stood the test of time and what today’s oil fragrances offer.

A Brief History of Oil Perfumes

history of perfume oils

Centuries before the advent of alcohol-based perfumes, ancient civilisations revered the art of perfumery, harnessing the aromatic properties of macerated and infused fragrance materials for rituals, anointing, and beautifying rituals. From Egypt to ancient Greece and Rome, oil perfumes adorned the skin of nobles and commoners alike.

In the Middle East, oil perfumes held a particularly esteemed place in society. Dating back to ancient Mesopotamia and continuing through the golden age of Islamic civilisation, perfumes played a significant role in daily life and cultural practices. The region’s abundant botanical resources, such as rose, jasmine, and oud, were meticulously distilled into precious oils prized for their exquisite fragrances.

The tradition of oil perfumes flourished in the courts of medieval caliphs, where skilled perfumers, known as “attars“, crafted intricate blends using age-old techniques passed down through generations. These fragrant concoctions, often presented in ornate bottles adorned with intricate designs, were cherished as symbols of luxury and refinement.

It wasn’t until much later, with the spread of trade routes and the influence of Western perfumery, that alcohol-based perfumes began to gain prominence in the Middle East. However, even in the face of evolving trends, the allure of oil perfumes persisted, deeply rooted in the region’s cultural heritage and traditions.

Advantages of Oil Perfumes over Alcohol-based Fragrances

Advantages of perfume oils

Oil perfumes offer a multitude of benefits that set them apart from their alcohol-based counterparts. Let’s explore some of the key advantages:

1. Gentler on the Skin
The skin microbiome and the need to maintain a healthy skin barrier are big on the agenda of cosmetics firms and consumers today. While they are complex concepts and science has much research ahead in order for us to truly understand the skin’s microbiome in relation to skin ageing and pathology, there is credence to the saying that alcohol strips the skin. It is used specifically for this purpose in medical settings in order to disinfect. We wrote on perfume as a sanitizer in a post during Covid.

One of the most notable advantages of oil perfumes lies in their emollient and occlusive formulation, depending on the viscosity and chemical structure of the oil. Unlike alcohol-based perfumes, which can often strip the skin of its natural oils and cause dryness or irritation, oil perfumes are formulated with moisturising carrier oils such as jojoba and coconut derivatives. These nourishing oils not only deliver fragrance – in a different way, as we’ll see below – but also help to moisturise the skin.

2. Longer-Lasting Scent
Another significant advantage of oil perfumes is their exceptional longevity. Thanks to their lower volatility compared to alcohol-based fragrances, oil perfumes release their scent gradually over time, resulting in a more sustained experience of the fragrance. From the first spritz to the final lingering notes, oil perfumes envelop you, releasing their fragrance slowly as the oil warms with body temperature. They provide a more intimate, skin scent, but are longer lasting.

3. Inclusivity and Accessibility
Oil perfumes offer an inclusive alternative for individuals with sensitivities to alcohol or those living in regions with strict regulations on the shipping of alcohol-based products or those who prefer not to use alcohol. Oil perfumes are suitable for a wider range of skin types, including those prone to dryness or irritated skin. Oil-delivered fragrance is far more accessible to fragrance enthusiasts around the world.

Oil perfumes are ideal for men as much as women. Their oils are less aggravating to newly-shaved skin than alcohol. The traditional splash-on after shave with its alcohol may not actually be beneficial to the skin given its harsh astringent qualities.

4. Portability and Travel-Friendliness
Oil perfumes also offer unparalleled portability, making them the ideal travel companion for fragrance-lovers on the move. Unlike alcohol fragrances, oil perfumes don’t face airline regulations which means that you can easily pack your favourite oil perfumes in your carry-on or check-in luggage without worrying about restrictions or exploding atomisers (the latter rarely happens, but is possible depending on the type of container used).

5. Eco-friendly Containers – More than Rollerball Application
Perfume oils typically come presented in rollerball vials for ease of applying a semi-viscous cosmetic to the skin in specific spots. Alcohol perfumes are delivered by atomisers that produce a fine veil of fragrance mist. The atomiser diffuses the fragrance wider and gives the person an aura – or sillage (vapour trail) of scent. See our explainer post on perfume terms:

Parlex Parfums: Perfume vocabulary and terms

The formulation dictates how powerful a sillage trails. However, perfume oils applied with a rollerball remain close to the skin. The advantage of the rollerball however is that is can be refilled easily and also disposed in a more sustainable way as it can be taken apart effortlessly. The atomiser flacon needs pliers to pull apart, and we imagine that many consumers won’t bother to do that.

Addressing Common Concerns and Misconceptions about Perfume Oils

Why perfumes oils are a must-have in your collection

Oil-based perfumes have garnered a loyal following for their unique benefits and fragrance experience. However, like any beauty product, they come with their fair share of questions and misconceptions. Let’s address some of the most common queries:

Are Oil-Based Perfumes Better than Alcohol-Based Ones?
This is a question that often arises when comparing oil-based and alcohol-based perfumes. Oil-based perfumes have the many advantages we mentioned already, but both types of fragrances have their own merits. Ultimately, it comes down to personal preference and individual skin chemistry.

However, it’s important to note that the efficacy of a perfume depends on various factors, including the quality of ingredients, formulation, and individual skin chemistry. Some people may find that alcohol-based perfumes suit their skin better, while others prefer the moisturising feel and longevity of oil-based fragrances. Ultimately, the best way to determine which type of perfume is right for you is to test different options and see how they perform on your skin or meet your preferences for fragrance.

Are Oil-Based Perfumes Safer than Alcohol-Based Ones?
As to safety, well, certainly in the EU with its strict cosmetics regulations, which require any cosmetic placed on the market in that jurisdiction to comply with and pass safety testing, both oil and alcohol fragrances for sale (legally) will be safe to use.

The UK, since Brexit, mirrors the EU, and the US is following suit with its massive update of cosmetics legislation in December 2022 known as Mocra (Modernization of Cosmetics Regulation Act). Similar laws apply in other jurisdictions worldwide. Safety is not the issue, unless you waft an open bottle of alcohol perfume near a heat source or apply a huge amount of perfume on clothes and hair and, before it dries, you are near a naked flame. That is not reasonable use and alcohol perfume packaging should have ample warning labels to direct safe use and storage. That is why you find hazard warnings and symbols on alcohol perfumes to show they are fire hazards in certain circumstances.

Debunking the Myth of Oil Perfume Greasiness
One common misconception about oil-based perfumes is that they leave the skin feeling greasy or oily. This likely stems from traditional oil perfumes, which often had a heavier consistency and required careful application to avoid residue buildup.

At Olentium, we formulated our oil perfumes with a nice compromise oil that echoes the performance of alcohol. By using Triethyl citrate as the perfume diluent and carrier, which is a light, dry oil, we eliminate the messiness associated with traditional oil perfumes. Our unique formulation combines the moisturising benefits of botanical oils with the lightweight texture of a dry ester, resulting in a contemporary fragrance delivered by atomiser, that absorbs quickly into the skin without leaving any greasy residue behind.

Our oil perfume range comes in extrait strength too, so is more akin to those powerful attars of ancient times.

In conclusion, oil-based perfumes offer plenty of advantages over typical alcohol fragrances and can deliver just as much, if not more so a luxurious and indulgent fragrance experience – and one that is both safe and effective for all skin types.

With Olentium’s innovative formulations and commitment to quality, you can enjoy the same fragrance as in our alcohol perfumes, but with moisturising benefits and in a long-lasting format free of any of the common concerns or misconceptions associated with oil perfume wearing.
