As a woman in your 40s, you may be facing many new (but exciting) changes in your life, all of which can have a direct impact on your skin. This is the time many women start experiencing symptoms related to peri-menopause, or perhaps you are already in the midst of full-fledged menopause. These hormonal changes happening in your body can not only cause hot flushes and mood swings, they can cause frustrating skin issues from dryness to breakouts.
But, with some sensible routine management, you can still retain glowing skin in your 40s. Your confidence in your beauty as you enter your mid 40s will also be invaluable in helping you through what might feel like daunting years ahead.
No matter what your age, a beautiful complexion should be obtained through using the right products, as well as following a lifestyle that focuses on your health and happiness through clean eating and staying fit.
This may seem easier said than done, but when you find a routine that works for you, it will never feel like a chore, but rather something that becomes a part of your daily ritual.
This should also be a beautiful time of your life though, that’s why we are here to help you navigate through the skin concerns so you can show off your most confident and glowing self!
Keep reading to find out a five of our favorite and practical ways you can enjoy gorgeous, sexy and glowing skin in your 40s and beyond.
Don’t over cleanse
We’ve always been taught to wash our face twice a day, but we are going to let you in on a little secret. While washing off your makeup and the dirt and grime of the day at night is essential for healthy skin, this is a step that can be skipped in the morning!
Over cleansing can strip your skin of its natural (and protective) oils, and this is the last thing you want at this stage in your life. This is an age where your skin can do with a little extra sebum. An oil-based cleanser followed by a splash of lukewarm water and your daily moisturizer – face oils are particularly useful at this stage in life – is exactly what your skin needs to start the day. So forego those hot steamy showers on waking.
Say yes to a serum
If you haven’t jumped on the serum train just yet, then this may convert you. Hydration is the key to youthful skin, and a serum is your best bet for intense hydration. The molecules in a serum are smaller than those in a regular moisturizer, so they allow the serum to sink deep into your pores where it delivers 10 times the active ingredients of a moisturizer. In this way, it can target your specific skin care concerns all the better.
This doesn’t mean you should skip the moisturizer though! A natural moisturizer, ideally with some UV-reflective powers, should always be applied over a serum to lock in the powerful antioxidants, as well as provide a protective barrier on the skin against environmental aggressors.
Be sun protection aware
Your 40s are a time when sun damage from your teens and twenties can start to show up as fine lines and sun spots. Now, more than ever, it is vital that you protect your skin with an SPF of at least 30 or higher every time you step outside, even on cloudy days and in winter months! The sun is your skin’s worst enemy when it comes to ageing, as it breaks down collagen, a structural protein essential for keeping your skin taut and plump.
To help combat damage that has already been done, be sure to invest in a daily moisturizer that is free from synthetic chemicals and rich in antioxidants to feed your skin with nutrients and fight free radicals all day long.
Lower stress for healthier skin
Stress not only weakens your immune system, it can wreak havoc on your skin too. Even if you aren’t dealing with any specific stress, hormonal changes can raise your stress hormone, cortisol, and leave you feeling fatigued, moody and maybe a little blue. When cortisol levels are raised your skin can be affected in various ways from dry skin to a higher risk of fine lines and wrinkles.
In order to even out your stress levels, you need to find an activity that helps you to relax, and one you will be motivated to do every day. The trick is finding something you enjoy, rather than something you feel you have to do. Perhaps you finally sign up for that yoga class you’ve been meaning to try, or maybe you start every morning with a meditation practice. Even something as simple as taking 30 minutes to read a good book, or go for a walk in nature can significantly lower your stress levels and boost your spirits. When you feel good on the inside it shows on the outside!
Rehydrate skin from within
We’ve talked before about the virtues of drinking water – around 2.5 litres a day – whether pure or in the form of herbal teas (or however you like your brew!). We can’t over emphasize how important it is to cell renewal, plumping up the skin and generally giving your body the means to cleanse from within.
Keeping rehydrated will do wonders for your skin texture and your overall wellness. It is all too easy, in both summer and winter, not to be hydrated.
