Dry, sensitive mature skin can be a bane of life as you hit your mid-40s onwards. If you find yourself putting your makeup on in the morning only to see it just flake off almost immediately, then welcome to the world of dry skin. While dry skin in your teens and twenties may mean you avoided the dreaded acne stage, oily-skinned women actually have it easier as they age, because that excess oil helps to protect their mature skin against the signs of aging.
Hydration truly is the key to youthful skin, and you’ll hear us say this time and time again. However, when your skin is chronically dry and sensitive to anything you’re using to try and combat your dry skin, it may seem like a catch 22 situation.
Fortunately, all you need is to be armed with some background knowledge and easy tips for a home mature skincare routine so you can say adios to dry, dull skin and hello to radiant and time-defying skin! The irritation, both mental and physical of sensitive mature skin needn’t be inevitable.
A paper entitled ‘Skincare Bootcamp: the evolving role of skincare‘, in the International Open Access Journal of American Plastic Surgeons, notes that “although cosmetic procedures have a significant impact on certain aspects of aging, such as deep, wrinkling, sagging, and volume loss, they fail to address the overall quality of the skin. [Whereas] Daily skincare routines potentially have the most significant long-term impact on the overall quality of a person’s complexion”. What this indicates is that sensible selfcare at home is of huge importance in delivering radiant skin as you age.
With that in mind, here are our top six easy DIY tips to care for dry, sensitive mature skin that won’t break the bank!
Prep Your Skin So That It Becomes An Absorbent Sponge For Your Skin Care Products
The first step in your mission to combat sensitive mature skin is to properly prepare your skin, so that when you apply your deeply hydrating products, you can be sure your skin will drink them right up. A good cleansing and exfoliation routine is key, but if your skin is sensitive too, you may want to steer clear of conventional synthetic, chemically-laden options.
Try to opt for an all-natural skin care line enriched with the highest quality plant nutrients to maintain your skin’s delicate moisture balance. Oil cleansers are wonderfully soothing and really help to remove all traces of dirt, grime and makeup. As for exfoliators, look for ones that contain gentle exfoliating ingredients, such as bamboo, that will effectively slough off dead skin cells without irritating or scratching your sensitive skin.
Rinse With Lukewarm Water To Avoid Stripping Your Skin
We all love a good, long and hot soak in the tub, but while this heat may feel delicious on your tired limbs, it’s not so great for your skin. Hot water strips your skin of essential oils, and if your skin is already dry and sensitive, it will only further aggravate it. Always rinse your face and body with lukewarm to cool water, and always pat it gently dry, never rub!
Try An All-Natural Botanical Serum as a Day Moisturizer
If you’re yet to try a serum then what are you waiting for? They are ideal for dry, sensitive mature skin. The molecules in a serum are smaller than those in a regular moisturizer, which allows the serum to sink deeper into your pores. Once there, it targets your specific skin care concerns thanks to highly active ingredients. A serum should always be applied under a moisturizer for best results. Drink Loads Of Water To Nourish Skin Cells Internally
This is another tip we can’t stress enough. If you’re using excellent products on your skin, but not drinking enough water, then you aren’t going to see results. Drinking enough water is absolutely essential to hydrate your skin cells internally, prompting them to produce more collagen, ensuring your skin stays plump and free from sagging.
Aim for 8 glasses a day, but be sure your water is pure and filtered. In some areas, depending on your water supply, water straight out of the tap can actually dehydrate you and affect your health due to the addition of chemicals such as fluoride and chlorine. Don’t drink from plastic bottled water for health and environmental reasons. Read more on the do’s and don’ts of water in your beauty regime here.
Protect Your Skin Against Ageing UV Rays
The sun leaves your skin with a sultry bronze glow, that masks the effect it has on your skin. Nothing dries out, or ages the skin faster than too much unprotected exposure to UV rays. You may not realize that just sitting in your car, or walking outside between buildings has an impact on your skin. Wear an SPF under your makeup every single day, and don’t forget about your ears, neck or hands! You can read more on summer skincare and safe tanning here.
Try A Natural AHA For A Deeper, Yet Gentle Exfoliation of Sensitive Mature Skin
If your skin is extremely dry and dull, and you have considered microdermabrasion or a chemical peel, but have been told that these treatments may be too harsh for your sensitive skin, then a natural AHA is for you!
Natural AHAs come in the form of fruit enzymes; papaya is one you will see often. Fruit enzymes work in the same way as a peel, to not just remove dead skin at a physical level, but also to actually break down the substance holding the dead cells to your skin. While chemical peels may be harsh, fruit enzyme peels are a lot gentler, but results can be clearly noticeable still.
Be sure to leave these types of AHA peels on your skin for only a short period before rinsing off and always follow the product instructions carefully. Finally, make sure you follow up with a good sunscreen as it may make your skin more sensitive to the sun. Some peels may contain Vitamin C or other active ingredients that can promote photosensitivity. It can be better to do these peels in the evening so your face has time to settle down before you apply other products on top or face sunlight. Again, follow each cosmetic brand’s instructions to the letter.
