If your lip care is just putting on a dash of lippy before you leave home, think again; especially if you’re a midlifer. Many of us in the 40+ bracket get frustrated when we apply lipstick in the morning. We realise our lips aren’t as plump as we remember and we get fed up dealing with our lip color bleeding into the fine lines now looming.
Just as with the rest of your skin, your lips also change as you age, becoming thinner and developing fine lines. This does not mean that you should ditch your daring shades of lipstick though! The trick is to simply take care of your lips so that when you apply your lipstick it glides on, stays put all day and never bleeds.
Just like you would exfoliate to brighten your skin, you can use a similar regimen to give your lips a boost, no injections required. Keep reading for a few tips to keep your lips luscious well into mid life and beyond.
Exfoliate Your Way To Plumper Lips
Exfoliation is key to not only removing dry skin flakes, but also for boosting circulation for an instant sexy pout.
There are a few ways you can go about exfoliating your lips. The first is with a sugar scrub. Simply mix a little coconut oil with some raw sugar in a little container that you can keep in your beauty cabinet. Massage a small amount over wet lips and rinse with water or gently wipe off with a cotton pad. The coconut oil will leave a delicious film of hydration over your lips, so it’s like a 2-in-1 treatment.
Another method that we recommend you do every day after brushing your teeth, is to simply gently brush your toothbrush in circular motions over your lips. You’ll notice an instant plumping effect.
Lip Hydration a Must
Hydration is key to youthful lips and a lack of it will result in shriveled lips. Hydration is also essential to lock in the plumping effects of your exfoliation. Many women turn to petroleum-based products, but it’s important to remember that anything you apply to your lips can end up in your body, where it can affect your health. Be sure to check labels and avoid conventional products.
Prevent Bleeding Lips With Lip Liner Or Primer
Don’t let lip liner scare you off. Lip liners are a great way to ensure your lipstick doesn’t bleed into any lines around your mouth, as well as helping your lipstick stay put. Our favorite tip is to line your lips and apply the lip liner all over your lips before applying your lipstick. This guarantees all day wear. Be sure, however, that your lip liner matches your lipstick.
Another option, of course, is to try a lip primer under your lipstick. It will have the same effect as lip liner, preventing bleeding and ensuring a long-lasting lip.
Choosing an ‘Age-appropriate’ Lip Color
Choosing the right color may seem like a challenge, but simply remember this simple rule from Bobbi Brown; always choose a lipstick that is just one or two shades darker than your natural color for a perfect nude lip color.
When it comes to actual color, lighter skin tones do better with lighter shades, whereas darker skin tones can go to the dark side. Darker colors also tend to make your lips look smaller, whereas lighter colors can make them look bigger.
- Fair skin fares well with nudes, light corals, soft pinks and colors that have a bit of an apricot undertone.
- Medium skin looks lovely in berry shades and mauves.
- Dark skin works well with chocolate shades, or deep reds and plums.
A great tip to remember is that matte lips can make the lips looks small, and draw attention away from them, whereas a dab of gloss on the bottom middle lip can fake a plumper pout.
Be Daring, Go Bold!
Ladies, just because you are past your twenties, does not mean you should avoid beautiful, bold colors, like the signature red lip!
As a mature woman with an array of real life experiences behind her, you have earned yourself a night out in that LBD and a gorgeous red lip. The trick is to simply follow all the steps above before applying your lipstick as well as finding that perfect shade of red to brighten your skin and bring out all your best features. Remember to keep the eye makeup simple when rocking a red lip, to avoid looking overdone.
Now that you know how to amp up your pout, you’re probably eager to get your hands on some gorgeous colors. Here are a few companies we love, as they carry a variety of sexy shades, but importantly all are free-from brands made with only the purest ingredients:
