Alcohol is very dehydrating, and this is the last thing you want if you’re trying to keep your skin looking plump and youthful. Dry skin increases the risk for fine lines and wrinkles, whereas a hydrated skin not only radiates health, but it promotes the formation of collagen to keep your skin looking young.
Drink Water With Every Alcoholic Beverage
You may not have even realized this, but most alcohol also contains hidden sugars. Sugar plays havoc on the skin by breaking down collagen and elastin, which is essential for keeping the skin taut and sag free. You can avoid some of the dehydrating effects of alcohol by drinking a glass of water alongside every drink. Not only will this help your skin, but you’ll thank us when you wake up in the morning without a hangover!
There’s actually some real benefits to those nuts sitting on the bar, apart from just being a great snack when the munchies hit. Consuming healthy proteins, such as raw, unsalted nuts along with alcohol, can actually slow the absorption of alcohol into your bloodstream. Not to mention the fact that nuts are rich in heart healthy fats that will keep you healthy and leave your skin glowing. When you think of a french meal, copious amounts of red wine may come to mind, but did you know that often at dinner parties, French women will accept a glass of wine, but barely take more than a sip or two? We aren’t saying you should just take one sip, but if you’re handed a large glass of wine, don’t feel pressured to drink it all just for appearances sake!
Keep Track of Your Units Per Week
It’s recommended that women should not drink more than 7 drinks per week, and this is more than enough in our opinion. Remember, not only does too much alcohol ravage your skin it can also increase your risk of certain cancers if consumed too frequently. There’s no shortage of public information out there, but we hazard a guess that most of us don’t really know what constitutes a ‘unit’ nor how much that translates as in terms of wine glass size. Time to get informed then!
Treat Your Skin
You’re human so if you fall off the wagon once or twice we sure aren’t going to judge! Just remember to show your skin some extra love if you do. Treat yourself to a weekly exfoliation to open up your pores followed by a deeply hydrating face mask rich in antioxidants and oils such as coconut oil or marula oil. Be sure to really let it sink in by enjoying a long soak in the tub while it works its magic.
You don’t have to restrict your alcohol completely to protect your skin. By following the helpful tips above, you can enjoy a few drinks at your summer parties while still maintaining a healthy and bright complexion. A few too many once in a long while won’t mean alcohol ages your skin – overnight – but indulge regularly and things will look less bright.
